<p>It is well known that the way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you take in. However a very low calorie diet can actually do more harm than good. When your body is craving more calories (energy) it can affect your metabolic rate. This means your body actually starts to eat away at your muscle mass.</p>
<p>It is doing this for the purpose of converting the muscle mass to energy, since there are no food reserves to take from. Because gaining muscle is the path to losing fat, this can have a highly detrimental effect on your body.</p>

Well, the twelve-day grapefruit diet claims to do just that. I am wary of any diet that insists you eat only one certain food, or one food most of the time, but there are definitely some health benefits to be found in the yummy citrus fruit we call grapefruit.</p>
<p>The grapefruit diet that has been around for a number of years is also known as the twelve day grapefruit diet because it is designed to be done for twelve days, with two days off, then resumed for twelve more days, and so on, until you lose the amount of weight you want to lose.</p>
<p>For the most part, the twelve day grapefruit diet limits your calorie intake to a very minimal eight hundred calories per day. Can you imagine? When you only consume eight hundred calories, whether you include grapefruit or not, you are bound to lose some weight. However, the twelve day grapefruit diet does have you either eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice with every meal.  </p>
<p>In addition, it limits the other types of foods you can enjoy.  For example, the veggies you must give up on the twelve day grapefruit diet include tomatoes, celery, cabbage, peas, cucumbers, green beans and lettuce.  </p>
<p>That being said, the twelve day grapefruit diet seems very hard to maintain. Yes, if you only have a few pounds to lose, you might want to try the grapefruit idea, but as far as using it as a regular eating plan, that seems unwise. The twelve day grapefruit diet is much too restrictive; it would be difficult to find anyone who had the stamina – even folks who adore grapefruit – to maintain such restrictions for long.</p>
<p>What is good about grapefruit, though? Isn’t fruit supposed to be good for us? Yes, of course it is. Grapefruit is a great source of vitamin C.  It is definitely low in calories.  </p>
<p>Many folks who swear by the greatness of <a href="http://redirectingat.com?id=1221X512157&xs=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pjatr.com%2Ft%2F2-410-12756-181&sref=rss" target='_blank'>colon cleansing</a> use grapefruit as part of their cleansing plan. <p>It may not be the best idea to latch onto a particular-food diet as a long-term way to eat, so the twelve-day grapefruit diet should not be used for a lifelong nutritional plan; however, grapefruit definitely is delicious and has a lot of health benefits, so go ahead and peel yourself one or slice one in half and dig out the little triangles of lusciousness.</p>
<p>Let’s face it the grapefruit would make a great substitute for a mid morning or afternoon snack, in place of an energy drink or candy bar.  </p>

However, the problems with the Atkins diet exist more in the misunderstandings by individuals rather than in the diet lacking in nutrition or any similar factor. For instance, many falsely believe they are able to consume as many fatty foods as they wish so long as they cut out vegetables and carbohydrates. This misconception will lead to many individuals suffering from harmful effects due to lack of nutrition.</p>
<p>Further problems with misconceptions concerning the Atkins diet result from people not realizing they need to exercise and workout almost every day in order to balance the diet and achieve maximum results. Very few, if any, results will result from using the Atkins diet without <a href="http://redirectingat.com?id=1221X512157&xs=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gopjn.com%2Ft%2F2-4121-12756-5866&sref=rss" target='_blank'>vitamins</a> and regular exercise. If anything, an individual will cause his or herself more harm than anything else if they do not fully understand how the Atkins diet work.</p>
<p>There is also a wealth of information available on the internet concerning the Atkins diet, which many take for canon to be the actual instructions of the Atkins diet. As information on the internet is almost impossible to regular, if the individuals who post this information do not understand that they are incorrect and misunderstand the instructions of the diet, further harm may be caused and problems with the Atkins diet will arise as a result.</p>
<p>Further problems can arise if an individual has a medical condition or worse, has one but does not realize it yet. If this individual requires a certain amount of nutrients every day and goes on the Atkins diet, within a week this person can be in serious need of medical attention. It is very important that a doctor be consulted about possible health conditions before going on any diet. If you wish to go on the diet but have a pre-existing condition, you may be able to modify the diet to suit your needs in order to receive the benefits without hurting yourself.</p>
<p>Furthermore, the Atkins diet is dangerous for any woman who is pregnant. The lack of nutrients and too much of other factors can possibly damage a fetus and create a child with mental disabilities that would not have otherwise occurred. This is often not viewed with enough seriousness and the long-term effects for mother and child can last an entire lifetime. Regardless of whether it is well known or not, the Atkins diet is not for any pregnant mother despite being advocated as such and this evidence is support by every scientific health organization in the United States.</p>
<p>Ideally, diets are a method to reduced the amount of fatty, salty, and sugary foods in what a person consumes every day. This is to be followed by exercise and adjusting as needed to make sure a person receives the amount of nutrients needed to avoid problems with the Atkins diet.</p>
